Sodium deoxycholate is a white crystalline powder with a bile-like smell. Has a strong bitter taste. Hygroscopic. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in anhydrous alcohol, insoluble in ether.

The role of sodium deoxycholate

Sodium deoxycholate is an ionic detergent that can be used to lyse cells and dissolve proteins that are poorly soluble in water. It can also be used in bile lysis experiments. The principle is that bile or bile salts have surface activity, which can quickly activate autolytic enzymes and accelerate the self-lysis of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. The agar plate method was positive when the colonies disappeared. In the test tube method, the culture with the addition of bile salts becomes clear, while the control tube is cloudy and positive.
