Magnesium stearate, also known as magnesium octadecanoate, is a fatty acid salt type anionic surfactant with a white powder appearance, a slight odor, and a greasy feeling. Soluble in hot fatty hydrocarbons, hot aromatic hydrocarbons, and hot fats, but insoluble in alcohols and water. It decomposes into stearic acid and corresponding magnesium salts when exposed to strong acids. Magnesium stearate has good adhesion and lubrication properties to the skin, and is used in cosmetics for powder products to enhance adhesion and lubrication. Magnesium stearate can be used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, with stability similar to calcium stearate. It can be used in food packaging materials in combination with zinc soap or calcium soap, but its application is not widespread. Magnesium stearate can also be used as a release agent for plastic products, as a raw material for cosmetic powders, moisturizing ointments, as a powder molding agent for pharmaceutical tablets, and as a semi transparent and flat paint agent. The laboratory produces magnesium stearate products through the double decomposition reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate, which can also be refined by combining edible grade solid organic acids (stearic acid, palmitic acid) with magnesium oxide.
